Why MapCommand

Your phone is a great map and a terrible handlebar control

On an adventure bike, your phone mount puts the best navigation you've ever had right in front of you. Then you try to zoom out at 80 km/h in wet gloves, on gravel.

Built for the trip, not the showroom

Rain, dust and corrugations? Bring them on. A tough, water-resistant shell, sealed buttons and a rock-solid mount, built to weather the storm and keep working when the track gets rough.

Who it's for

  • Adventure and touring riders who navigate by phone
  • Rally riders running a roadbook app
  • Anyone who has pulled over just to zoom the map

Questions riders ask

Does it need a battery or charging?

No. It runs from your bike's 5 V USB socket and starts with the bike.

Will it fit my bike?

It clamps onto the 22 mm (7/8 in) part of the bar next to your controls, with 4, 9 or 14 mm spacers to clear your switch cluster. Adventure bikes like the KTM, Husqvarna, BMW GS, Yamaha Ténéré 700, Honda Africa Twin and Suzuki DR650 have either 22 mm bars or fat bars that narrow to 22 mm at the controls, so MapCommand fits either way. No free 22 mm bar? The Diamond Ball Adapter mounts it on a 1-inch ball. All three spacers are in the box, so you can pick the right height when you fit it.

Can I change what the buttons do?

Yes. Switch between four built-in profiles at the roadside: Navigation, Roadbook, Navigation + and Custom. In apps that let you choose what each button does, like DMD2, use Custom and set each button however you like.

What happens if it loses connection?

It reconnects to your phone automatically when Bluetooth comes back. Nothing is sent until it is connected.

Frequently asked questions

Will it work with my phone and map app?

MapCommand pairs with your phone over Bluetooth in seconds. OsmAnd and Guru Maps work straight away. On Android, the free MapCommand app adds Gaia GPS, Google Maps, Waze and Maps.me: install it once, set up in about 2 minutes, test your buttons and ride. On iPhone, Google Maps, Gaia GPS and others work through a built-in iPhone feature after a one-time setup. Check your app on the Works with page before you buy.

How do I know if this will fit on my bike?

MapCommand clamps to the 22 mm (7/8 in) part of the handlebar next to your controls. That is the standard size there on most adventure and road bikes, even ones with fat bars. Check three things:

  • Clear bar: about 24 mm of straight bar for the clamp, either inboard of your mirror clamp or in the gap between the mirror clamp and the switch cluster.
  • Room for the unit: the face is 79 × 89 mm and it's 27 mm deep at the thickest point. With the 4 mm spacer the back of the unit sits 17 mm from the bar centre; the 9 mm spacer makes that 22 mm, and the 14 mm spacer 27 mm.
  • Clearance: the unit has to clear your switch cluster and mirror clamp. If either is chunky, use a thicker spacer to move MapCommand further out.

Adventure bikes: the KTM, Husqvarna, BMW GS, Yamaha Ténéré 700, Honda Africa Twin and Suzuki DR650 have either 22 mm bars or fat bars that narrow to 22 mm at the controls, so MapCommand fits either way. No free 22 mm bar? The Diamond Ball Adapter mounts it on a standard 1-inch ball.

All three spacers (4, 9 and 14 mm) come in the box, so you can try each one on your bike and use the one that clears best.

Does it work with my Quad Lock or RAM phone mount?

Yes. MapCommand doesn't replace your phone mount. Keep your Quad Lock, RAM or other mount for the phone, and clamp MapCommand on the bar right where your thumb sits. If you'd rather put it on a RAM-style 1-inch ball, use the Diamond Ball Adapter.

How is it powered?

From your bike's 5 V USB socket. There's no battery to charge: MapCommand starts when the bike does and reconnects to your phone on its own.

Will it drain my battery?

No. MapCommand talks to your phone over Bluetooth Low Energy and only sips power from your bike's USB socket. Wi-Fi stays off while you ride. Plug it into a socket that switches off with the ignition and it uses nothing while the bike is parked.

Can I use it in the rain?

Absolutely. MapCommand has a tough, water-resistant shell with sealed buttons and a sealed status light. It's built to weather the storm, so ride on when the clouds roll in.

Does it work with gloves?

Yes. The eight buttons are raised and sit in recessed pockets, so you can find and press them in winter gloves.

What warranty do I get?

12 months. If your MapCommand fails in normal use, we replace it.

Something's not working with my MapCommand. How do I get help?

Start with the basics: check the green light flashes when you start the bike, and that MapCommand shows as connected in your phone's Bluetooth settings. The MapCommand app on Android, and the iPhone setup guide, both walk you through testing your buttons.

Still stuck? Contact us or email info@mapcommand.com.au. Every MapCommand owner gets help by email, on Android and iPhone. Tell us your phone, your map app and what's happening, and we'll get you riding again.
